AFFIES HOËRSKOOL
EEUFEES

AFFIES HIGH SCHOOL
CENTENERY CELEBRATION
The Afrikaans Hogere Skool (Afrikaans High School) opened their doors on 28 January 1920, in the home of General PJ Joubert, Visagie Street 218 Pretoria.
It was seen in those years as a rebel school because it was the first Afrikaans speaking high school. Afrikaans was at the time not yet recognised as an official language of South Africa. The school opened its doors for boys and girls.
2020 Is the year in which the school turned 100 years old and one can look back over many, many years in which the school humbly began and grew to a school that is reckoned with on all levels of society.
An interesting fact from the schools history is that it started with 3 personnel teaching 44 learners! Today Afrikaans Seuns (Affies) has 1385 boys and they look back at a century of grace.
Louis Schmidt, Pierre Edwards, Wynand Olivier, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies, Dean Greyling, AB de Villiers, Francois (Faf) du Plessis en Jacques Rudolph, is but a few names that called “Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool” their home, and “Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool” names like, Brumilda van Rensburg, Sandra Prinsloo, Vanes-Mari Du Toit (netball player), Helena Barnard en Susan Marx.
“Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool” is quoted to be especially thankful for all the blessings that have enriched the school over the years. They agree with what their brothers across the street says: that Affies is not just a school – it is a lifestyle. Affie students commonly say that someone do not spend time at the school and then disappear untouched from it.

Affies 100 years celebration opened with a thanksgiving service in the Oos-Kerk. Minister Angie Motshekga was also at the celebrations. She was giving an inspiring message to the pupils and said that her philosophy as a Minister is that a school should not merely be a place of study, but also an opportunity to form responsible citizens and dynamic future leaders. She also said that you educate a nation when you educate a girl.
As part of the Affies’ 100 year celebration, a group of 18 Affies alumni climbed Kilimanjaro. The Kilimanjaro group travelled at 2am on 21 January 2020 to Kenya to summit the peak on 28 January.
